In 2002, 41 percent of freshmen were in the top 10 percent of their high school class. Freshman SAT scores were at an all-time high, and minority enrollment was up. Pitt’s expansion of cultural opportunities, efficient student services, and construction of the Petersen Events Center was recognized for improving the quality of student life.

The 2002 California State Science Fair was held on May 20-21 in the California Science Center. There were 956 participants from over 300 schools throughout the State presenting projects in competition for over $60,000 in awards.

In 2002, Pride week was officially proclaimed by eight out of the nine municiplities of the region (Vaughan had declined). In the case of Richmond Hill, their proclamation followed a unanimous vote of council. York Region ... granted official recognition for Pride Week.

By virtue of taking second in the 2002 Washington CABA Championships, the Northwest Dodgers will travel to Broken Arrow, OK (Tulsa) to participate in the 2002 CABA 13U Ultimate World Series. The dates for the tournament are July 26th through August 3rd. The 2001 Dodgers took 5th at the 12U CABA World Series in Omaha, NE.

In FY 2002, Congress appropriated $142 million for the Smaller Learning Communities program. The competition will begin in late fall 2002 and SLC applications will be available at that time. Applicants will have sixty days to submit an application once the application has been released. The President did not request funds for the Smaller Learning Communities grant competition in his FY 2003 budget.

Salt Lake City is named host city of the Olympic Winter Games of 2002 at the 104th IOC Session in Budapest, Hungary in the first ballot vote. Salt Lake City recieved 54 votes, followed by Sion and Ostersund with 14 votes each. Quebec recieved seven votes.
