In the fall of 1987, 20/20 was moved to Fridays at 10:00 p.m., where by the 1990-1991 season it ranked 20th in the annual ratings as a result. While the series moved to the 8:00 p.m. timeslot briefly on October 12, 2007, it reverted to its usual time two weeks later.

Under Downs as host, 20/20 evolved into a more standard yet unique newsmagazine and received kinder reviews. The program originally was seen as a summer replacement series, after which during the 1978-1979 season it was presented on a once-a-month basis before acquiring a regular Thursday 10:00 p.m. slot beginning May 31, 1979. Ratings were generally very good during the summertime during its eight years on Thursday nights despite competition from Knots Landing on CBS and Hill Street Blues on NBC.

In providing no actual medical data and using several pieces of misinformation, ABC "20/20"'s report slanted toward making circumcision seem "slightly" beneficial. NOCIRC of North Carolina challenges ABC to present a single statistically significant medical benefit for routine infant circumcision. We suspect that "20/20" specifically avoided statistical data in their report to avoid exposing the lack of any significant medical benefit to a newborn surgery that is so intrinsically tied to a cultural or religious importance for many individuals in the United States.

There is a prudent process by which the 20/20 program's ambitious aims can be checked for consistency and do-ability, and which lends itself, indeed depends on, very specific local tailoring and participation. But any eventual remedial action program along these lines that is going to yield results has to be accompanied ("sold") by a clear announced target and process that the voters and public can understand, want to work toward, and which they are confident will yield visible near-term results.
