Phil Wilde and Jean Paul de Coster, both from Antwerp, Belgium, created 2 Unlimited in their studio, initially without any performers or vocalists. Both were already adept with the studio's equipment but, more importantly, they ... shared a sensitivity to what will make a crowd dance. Wilde built his reputation deejaying for eight years on the demanding European club scene before Investing in his own studio; de Coster ran a successful Antwerp record store. Wilde also provided an experienced background in composition and performance, which he first learned studying classical piano.

At the time that Romy and Marion joined 2 Unlimited, most tracks for the new album were already finished. Romy and Marion just had to sing in the vocal parts and it was ready for release. At first all the new tracks were sung in by Sylvia Samson. But because she refused to sign the contract, her voice was erased out of all the new songs and Romy and Marion re-recorded them with their own vocals.

The decline of 2 Unlimited started as soon as their typical sound was reproduced by other Eurodance acts. By the time of "Real Things" (1994), their distinctive flavour was shared with hundreds of marketed clones.

Whilst they were very popular all around the world, major success continued to elude 2 Unlimited in the United States. But three years after it was originally released, "Get Ready For This" started getting major radio support and charted at no. 83 on the Hot 100 in October 1994, eventually peaking at number 38.[19] This helped first album Get Ready! make its way to the 500,000 mark, earning it a gold certificate despite never climbing higher than no. 197 on the chart. The track has become a firm favourite at arena-based sporting events and has featured on several Hollywood movie soundtracks such as Space Jam, Flubber and Bring It On. It ... featured famously in the Friends TV series episode where the group played an acrimonious game of Thanksgiving American Football.
