The year 1967 was an extremely busy, and extremely rewarding year for the men and officers of the 57th Assault Helicopter Company. They started the year with little more than an activation order at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. At the Christmas Truce looking back over the year the unit had come a long way. It was by then a combat proven unit serving the cause of freedom at Kontum City in the Republic of Vietnam. Throughout the year 1967 the 57th had had gone through an intensive training period at Fort Bragg. In October the Gladiators and Cougars deployed to Vietnam and by the end of December were operating from a new home at Kontum Army Airfield.

In 1967 Ford used virtually the same body lines as the 1966. The new 1967 look was distinguishing from the previous year. Ford moved the turn signal lamps from the grill to the bumper as well as all new molding and ornamentation. The 1967 had great styling, and actually had great similarity in appearance to the 1967 Fairlane. Ford offered the Galaxie in the Galaxie 500 in both hardtop and convertible, as well as the Ford Custom 500, and the 500XL available in both hardtop and Convertible. Ford continued the 7 Litre model for 1967 which would be the last year of this special performance model.

As 1967 come to a close, the first permanent building was completed. The new Mess hall was opened on the day before Christmas. On Christmas day the annual turkey feast was served. Looking back on 1967 the men of the 57th Assault Helicopter Company, the 615th Transportation Detachment and the 822nd Avionics section had come far. They had a great deal to be proud of and all were looking forward to the coming truce in celebration of the 1968 Lunar New Year, called TET. And what a celebration it turned out to be!

On June 5, 1967, Israel was indeed alone, but its military commanders had conceived a brilliant war strategy. The entire Israeli Air Force, with the exception of just 12 fighters assigned to defend Israeli air space, took off at 7:14 a.m. with the intent of bombing Egyptian airfields while the Egyptian pilots were eating breakfast. In less than 2 hours, roughly 300 Egyptian aircraft were destroyed. A few hours later, Israeli fighters attacked the Jordanian and Syrian air forces, as well as one airfield in Iraq. By the end of the first day, nearly the entire Egyptian and Jordanian air forces, and half the Syrians’, had been destroyed on the ground.
