For the first time since the inception of popular music charts in Australia, Australian artists managed to claim an equal share of their own number one spot during 1965. No less than five different acts spent a total of 26 weeks at number one. Top of the crop with three home alone #1’s was Ray Brown & the Whispers. Heading an overseas challenge as well as being immensely popular at home was The Seekers while ‘65 saw two further chart toppers from the ever popular Billy Thorpe & the Aztecs. The first of five number one singles from the Easybeats made it to the top this year but the longest time spent at number by any artist Down Under during the year went to Australia’s own Normie Rowe & the Playboys who managed an eleven week run at #1 with their version of the former Doris Day chart topper, “Que Sera Sera”. Internationally, apart from the continued mega-success of The Beatles, the big act to emerge in 1965 was undoubtedly The Rolling Stones who followed their two single weeks at the top of the UK charts with three huge international hits including one of the most popular rock songs of the decade “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction”.
