Spring, 1957 There were 517 black students who lived in the Central High district and were eligible to attend Central in the fall. Eighty expressed an interest in doing so. Following interviews with the Superintendent and staff, 17 are selected for the first year of integration at Central. Eight of those later decide to remain at all-black Horace Mann High School.
On May 21st, 1957, an outbreak of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes occurred across the Lower Ohio Valley and southern Plains. In fact, more tornadoes were reported in the year of 1957 than in any previous year during the 42 year period of records held by the Weather Bureau (The Weather Bureau was renamed the National Weather Service in 1967). The month of May was a busy one, as 230 tornadoes were reported. May 24, 1955 The School Board votes unanimously to adopt Superintendent Virgil Blossom's plan of gradual integration that would start in September, 1957, at the high school level and add the lower grades over the next six years. Mr. Blossom is named "Man of the Year" by the Arkansas Democrat for his work on desegregation.
Lou Klimchock was signed by the Athletics as an amateur free agent in 1957. The 17 year old from Hostetter Pennsylvania played 39 games at second base for the A's. He averaged .273 for the season and had 21 stolen bases. In 1958 he played for Pocatella in the Pioneer League and led the league with a .398 average. He ... led the Pioneer league in runs and hits. He was promoted to the major leagues at the end of the season and made his his major league debut in September with the A's.
