The 1948 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XIV Olympiad, were held in 1948 at Wembley Stadium in London, England. These were the first Summer Olympics to be held since the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin because no Games were held during World War II.
Jimmmy DeShong was the manager of the Lincoln A's in 1948. He started his pitching career in the Blue Ridge League in 1928. He pitched for Harrisburg in 1929 and 1930. He moved to the west coast and pitched for Sacramento in 1932 where he was 19-6. He was picked up by the Athletics at the end of the 1932 season and appeared in 6 games with the major league team. He pitched in Newark in 1933 then with the Yankees in 1934 and 1935.
Gejdenson, the first child of Holocaust survivors elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, was born in 1948 in an American displaced persons camp in Eschwege, Germany. He received an A.S. degree from Mitchell College in New London, Connecticut in 1968 and a B.A. from the University of Connecticut in Storrs, Connecticut in 1970. In 1974, he was elected to the Connecticut House of Representatives serving two terms before accepting a post in the administration of Connecticut Governor Ella T. Grasso. He is married to Betsy Henley-Cohn, and they are the parents of four children. Gejdenson is now involved in international trade in his own company Sam Gejdenson International.
Bob Wellman was a 22 year old Ohio boy who was a Western League All Star in 1948. He played for Martinsville in 1947 and averaged .302 for Lincoln in 1948. The 6' 4" Wellman was called up to the Athletics at the end of the season and he made his major league debut in September where he played in four games. He was back in the minors in 1949 but returned for a cup of coffee in 1950. In all he played in 15 major league games.
The Games of the XIV Olympiad were held in 1948 in London, United Kingdom. After a hiatus of 12 years caused by the outbreak of World War II, these were the first Summer Olympics to be held since the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin.

Eager to come back after two dormant Olympiads, the IOC offered the 1948 Games to London. Much of the British capital had been reduced to rubble in the blitz, but the offer was accepted and the Games went on–successfully, without frills, and without invitations extended to Germany and Japan. The Soviet Union was invited, but chose not to show.
