"On 6 June 1944 the Western Allies landed in northern France, opening the long-awaited 'Second Front' against Adolf Hitler's Germany. Commanded by U.S. Army General Dwight D. Eisenhower, the Normandy assault phase, code-named "Neptune" (the entire operation was "Overlord"), was launched when weather reports predicted satisfactory conditions on 6 June.

August 3, 1944: Strassenhof camp; 2,400 Jews are marched away to never return. They were all under the age of eighteen and gassed in a makeshift crematorium. Three days later the Red Army liberates the 600 surviving camp members.

The Red Army made substantial gains in Byelorussia during the summer months of 1944. The Soviets captured Vitebsk on June 26th and Minsk on July 3rd. The Normandy invasion prevented the Germans from sending reinforcements to the Eastern Front which resulted in a series of Russian victories. By the end of August, the Red Army had reached the borders of East Prussia and had invaded Poland and Romania.

The calm of the TimeTable belies the reduced manpower of the New York Central and the increased hurry of transporting material and goods. The railroads did not let themselves be declared a critical industry and that changed their ability to get steel and other normal supplies with the draft reducing their manpower.
