The 20 recordings on the 1937-1941 volume were cut variously in Paris during 1937; Hilversum, Holland, in 1938; and New York in 1940 and 1941. The French and Dutch recordings represent South's final European sessions before his return to the United States in 1938 -- that's Django Reinhardt strumming along on the two Parisian sides, "Fiddle Blues" and "Interpretation Sing du Premier Mouvement du Concerto en Re Mineur de Jean-Sebastien Bach-Part 2," with Stephane Grappelli joining him on violin. South's own quintet (including the extraordinarily sweet piano of David Martin) is featured on the four Hilversum sides, all of which -- "Honeysuckle Rose," "On the Sunny Side of the Street," the delightful "Fiddleditty," and the extraordinary "Black Gypsy," a track worthy of Jascha Heifetz -- are worth the price of this disc. South's New York-based Columbia and Okeh sides never sold as well as what he did for Swing, but they're equally worthwhile. The disc closes out with his hot rendition of "Lady Be Good" and a mellow version of "Stompin' at the Savoy."

The 1937 baseball season broke open with one of the many controversies in the career of St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Dizzy Dean. In a preview of the 1988 balk brouhaha, baseball commissioner Ford Frick had ordered umpires to enforce the rule requiring pitchers to come to a discernible stop in the stretch position. During a Giants-Cardinals matchup on May 19, a balk of this type was called against Dean in the sixth; he became enraged and began throwing at the New York batters. The result was a bench-clearing brawl and a $50 fine for Dean.
In 1937, Karo published a cookbook entitled "49 Delightful Ways to Enjoy Karo." Its simple line-art and humble duo-tone design spoke of the hard times Americans faced trying to emerge from the Great Depression. Since the beginning, almost all of Karo's cookbooks have been free. The consumer pays only the small costs of shipping and handling.
By 1937, Bunton's Seed was again expanding -- filling a nearly block-long structure at the southeast corner of Jefferson and Floyd streets. The company would remain there until 1962, when the building was demolished to make way for the Jefferson-Brook street exit from Interstate 65.

The 1937 season was not a very active one, with only three hurricanes and no major hurricanes forming during the season and those stayed out to sea. Most of the activity during the ’37 season consisted of tropical storms. Ironically, Nova Scotia saw more tropical cyclone activity than the entire US east and gulf coasts. A tropical storm hit Tampa, Florida and then grazed Nova Scotia. Tropical storms ... hit Daytona Beach, Louisiana, southern Nova Scotia, and rural northwest Florida. The most notable storm of the season actually wasn’t tropical, at the time it made itself notable at least.
