Circa 1930, this outfit from the Good Lite Company of Bridgeport, Connecticut is a typical offering from that company. The lamps are outside coated Japanese C-9 intermediate base examples, and the cord is marked Good Lite, which is uncommon. Most Good Lite offerings were economy sets, with low quality cords and inexpensive imported lamps. This set is no exception, as the cord lacks the typical weatherproofing usually evident on more expensive sets. Note the box art, which is quite primitive when compared to the competition's offerings. Many Good Lite sets are this way.

After the blizzards in winter 1930-1931, the drought began. First the northern plains felt the dry spell, but by July the southern plains were in the drought. It was not until late September that the ground had enough water to justify planting. Because of the late planting and early frost, much of the wheat was small and weak when the spring winds of 1932 began to blow. The wheat was ... beaten by dirt from the abandoned fields. In March, there were twenty-two days of dirt storms and drifts began to build in the fence rows.

T[H]e 1930's were a perilous time for public education. With cash money in short supply parents were unable to provide their children with the necessary clothes, supplies, and textbooks (which were not furnished in some states) to attend school. Taxes, especially in rural areas, went unpaid. With the loss of revenue, school boards were forced to try numerous strategies to keep their districts operating. School terms were shortened. Teachers' salaries were cut.
