In 1930 the Great Depression was well on its way. It's funny how different the world looks when times are difficult. If you've been reading along, it must be quite apparent by now that the Post Office Department did not consider stamp collectors an ally and certainly not a source of revenue. In fact, Postmaster New, 1923-1929, referred to collectors as "cranks" and "nuts" in his correspondence. Issue after issue of stamps commemorating important events in American history had been refused and in their stead, stamps of obvious political nature issued, totally without regard to the revenues these stamps may have provided if properly promoted.

Jasper Johns was born in 1930 in Augusta, Georgia, and raised in South Carolina. He began drawing as a young child, and from the age of five knew he wanted to be an artist. For three semesters he attended the University of South Carolina at Columbia, where his art teachers urged him to move to New York, which he did in late 1948. There he saw numerous exhibitions and attended the Parsons School of Design for a semester. After serving two years in the army during the Korean War, stationed in South Carolina and Sendai, Japan, he returned to New York in 1953. He soon became friends with the artist Robert Rauschenberg (born 1925)... a Southerner, and with the composer John Cage and the choreographer Merce Cunningham.

The new brick high school was begun in the late '20's and reached completion in 1930. For the first time the high school students had their own building. During the 30's Fife High School became known as the Judo Center of the northwest. The school auditorium held 2 mats rather than just one. Thus, events ended earlier in the evening. Fife High School took advantage of this interest in Judo among the Japanese-American students.
