Herb Pennock went 17-6 in 1928, leading the American League with five shutouts. He ... posted a 2.56 ERA, the best of his 22-year career. With his 240-162 lifetime record, Pennock approached Hall of Fame credentials. Voters, however, were not fooled. With the powerful Yankees, Pennock went 162-90; with mere mortal teams, he was a mediocre 78-72.
The Nebraska State League was resurrected for its third iteration in 1928. Fairbury was one of the charter members of the league. Lee Fairchild of Kansas City was named manager of the club. Over 100 players tried out for the 15 places on the squad.
The campaign of 1928 marked a change from the staid front-porch efforts of earlier years to a more active style. Radio played a surprisingly important role. Hoover, who was not an impressive public speaker, came across to listeners as measured and thoughtful. Smith... was an inspiring speaker, but his New York accent and regional pronunciation of words grated on the ears of many Westerners and Southerners.

With his 1994 election to the U.S. Senate, Senator Frist became the first practicing physician to be elected to that body since 1928. He rose to Senate Majority Leader just eight years after his election, having served less time in Congress than anyone ever to hold that position. Throughout his tenure, he has been at the forefront of all major legislation on the financing, organization and delivery of healthcare. Fulfilling his pledge to serve just two terms, Senator Frist retired in 2007. He presently serves as the Frederick H. Schultz Class of 1951 Visiting Professor of International Economic Policy at Princeton University, teaching health economics at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs.
