In 1928, a working full-scale replica of the locomotive, its tender and two passenger cars were built from original plans to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the South Carolina Canal and Rail Road Company. The replica carried passengers on special occasions throughout the Southern Railway and, later, the Norfolk Southern system.
Maynard Ferguson, born May 4, 1928 in Montreal, started his career at the age of 13 when he performed as a featured soloist with the Canadian Broadcasting Company Orchestra. He played with some of the great Big Band Leaders of the 1940's including Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Barnett, Jimmy Dorsey and Stan Kenton. In 1945, at age 17, Ferguson became the leader of his own Big Band. The 78-year old musical phenomenon went on to record more than 60 albums, receiving numerous honors and awards including the GRAMMY(R) nomination for "Gonna Fly Now." In 2005, Ferguson was awarded Canada's highest civilian honor, the "Order of Canada" from the Right Honorable Governor General Adrienne Clarkson. In addition to those accolades, Ferguson has been the recipient of DownBeat Magazine's prestigious "DownBeat" Award.
The 1928 eruption occurred at the height of the fascism era, under the totalitarian leadership of Mussolini. Mussolini's government saw in the destruction of a small town a good opportunity to demonstrate its efficiency in providing aid and rapid rebuilding of the town in a new site. As a matter of fact the "new" Mascali offered a completely different standard of life to the displaced inhabitants of the destroyed town. Compared to most other towns and villages around Etna, the rebuilt Mascali appears much more modern, and it contains a number of public buildings of a peculiar architectural style that is characteristic of the Mussolini era. Most impressive is the main church ("chiesa madre"), which is ornamented with a large torch, symbol of the Italian fascism, standing above the statue of Christ. The publications by Duncan et al. (1996) and Chester et al. (1999) on this subject are an entertaining read.
Scott C11 - The Beacon Air Mail When the fiscal budget for 1927, (July 1, 1927 through June 30, 1928), was reduced from the $8 million of the 1926 fiscal year to $7.5 million, the Postmaster was forced to tighten the belts of the stamp production process considerably. Chief among these was elimination of any new commemorative issues. It was an unfortunate coincidence that this period marked the 150th anniversary of some of the more famous events in the American Revolution, events that by all rights deserved to be commemorated by postage stamps. After much prodding, including from the then President Coolidge, Postmaster New authorized the production of the "Surrender of Burgoyne" and "Green Mountain Boys of Vermont" commemoratives. Further pressure was exerted to issue a stamp honoring the events at Valley Forge.
