The 1928 eruption produced about 40 million cubic meters of lava, much less than is written in many sources, and ... was not a particularly large eruption for Etna standards. The destructive potential came from two other important factors: the low elevation of the main eruptive vents (1150 m) and the high effusion rates during the first days of the activity, which may have exceeded 100 cubic meters per second. In comparison, the peak effusion rates during the July-August 2001 eruption were less than 20 cubic meters per second. For these reasons the lava flow that brought the destruction of Mascali advanced very fast along a narrow valley. The unfortunate town was located at the valley floor, which is probably the worst place for a town to lie near an active volcano.

The existing 330-room historical tower, originally built in 1928 as the Medinah Athletic Club, will be significantly upgraded to compete even more effectively in the luxury hotel market. Pending approval and market conditions, it is anticipated that construction could begin in mid-to-late 2007. The InterContinental's historic tower will remain open for business during most of the redevelopment and is taking bookings for 2007.

The mill, which employs 375 people, was constructed in 1912 and acquired by International Paper in 1928. It has one paper machine that can produce nearly 200,000 tons of Bleached Board and Bristols paper each year for products such as greeting cards; paperback book covers; and cartons for frozen foods, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.
