The Torei Ningyo (Friendship Dolls) were established in 1927 by the Japanese Committee for World Friendship Among Children in response to 12,739 “Blue-eyed dolls” sent by American children to Japan as part of a cultural exchange. Wishing to reciprocate but not compete with the quantity of American dolls, the Japanese committee decided to create magnificent dolls, one for each US state, with accessories appropriate to each doll and her home prefecture, to show the material culture of a Japanese child of the time. Fifty-eight Japanese dolls were made, representing Japan’s 47 prefectures, four territories, six major cities and one “national” doll.

Founded in 1927, Mac-Gray derives its revenue principally through the contracting of card- and coin-operated laundry facilities in multiple housing facilities such as apartment buildings, colleges and university residence halls, condominiums and public housing complexes. Mac-Gray contracts its laundry rooms under long-term leases. These leases typically grant Mac-Gray exclusive contract rights to laundry rooms on the lessor's premises for a fixed term, which is generally seven to 10 years, in exchange for a negotiated portion of the revenue collected. Mac-Gray's laundry facilities business consists of approximately 45,000 multi-housing laundry rooms located in 40 states and the District of Columbia. Mac-Gray ... sells, services, and leases commercial laundry equipment to commercial laundromats and institutions.

In 1927, 40,000 public penny scales were dispersed throughout the US and earned $5 million dollars for the public scale industry. The 1927 flood, which inundated parts of Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, and Tennessee, killed some 250 people and caused approximately $250 to $350 million in loss at the time. "With the economic and social changes that have occurred along the Mississippi River since 1927, a modern-day event would not just be a regional economic catastrophe but a national disaster," said Dr. Grossi.

Johnson still holds the all-time record for shutouts with 110.
