The summer of 1926 was a time of trouble and uncertainty for each of the three poets whose correspondence is collected in this moving volume. Marina Tsvetayeva was living in exile in France and struggling to get by. Boris Pasternak was in Moscow, trying to come to terms with the new Bolshevik regime. Rainer Maria Rilke, in Switzerland, was dying. Though hardly known to each other, they began to correspond, exchanging a series of searching letters in which every aspect of life and work is discussed with extraordinary intensity and passion. The 1926 season in London brought a new conductor to the rostrum at the Princes, Dr. Malcolm Sargent. Unhappily for the fans, Utopia was not among the operas. Instead there was a new Mikado, entirely redressed with sets by one of the most talented scene designers of the day, Charles Ricketts. It was the first time since the original production that there had been fresh designs for the opera. Ricketts was well known for his attempts to dispel what he called the visual literalness of the English stage. For the costumes he went back to 17th century Japan but the designs were not copies.

Built in 1926, the Delta Queen features a steel hull and a superstructure constructed of wood -- a direct reflection of the designs of her time. Subsequent Coast Guard regulations prohibited wooden superstructures, but Congress decided more than 40 years ago to provide a special exemption from these rules for the historic Delta Queen. This exemption, which Congress had extended no fewer than six occasions, was set to expire in November 2008. Majestic America Line recently joined forces with those who know and love the fabled ship to extend this exemption. A comprehensive campaign was launched to raise awareness for the Delta Queen's excellent safety record, its impeccable training program and the quality and experience of the crew. However, Congress recently chose not to include this extension on legislation.

[C]elebrated in 1926, Black Music Month has been proclaimed by the President every year since 1979. 2006 marks the second year that Remy Martin 1738 has developed a program around Black Music Month. In 2005, the brand teamed with renowned hip-hop producer Hype Williams and collaborated with the Rhythm & Blues Association and Jazz Alliance to compile a comprehensive list of the 1,738 most influential songs in black music. This year, Remy Martin is building substantially on that foundation.
