1926: Work
built 187 days ago
Born in 1926, the son of a railroad worker, Fo began his career as a performer in satirical cabaret-style revues. Later, he wrote, produced and directed a string of successful "bourgeois comedies" (so called because they were performed mainly for middle class audiences). He has ... written for and performed in several films and his one foray into television was as writer, director and co-star of Italy's most popular television series, "Canzonissima", which was ultimately removed from the airwaves by the Italian government after Fo portrayed a 12th century Pope who was known for being particularly cruel and hanging monks by their tongues from the church doors when they didn't agree with him.
Born January 23, 1905, Mr. Hauff graduated from Morningside College in 1926. He taught math and economics for three years and had planned to go into business with his father who owned a hardware store. But in 1929, the Stock Market crashed and instead he went to work for Spalding Sports Worldwide. When Spalding decided to close the Sioux City store, Mr. Hauff opened his first sporting goods store, and when Spaulding closed their store in Omaha, he expanded into Omaha. In 1940, Mr. Hauff incorporated Hauff sports with his partner Carl Haase and they continued to expand into Nebraska and South Dakota.
Restoration work began immediately after the 1926 hurricane subsided, using primitive methods and equipment and safety standards that were a far cry from work practices used in the 1990s. Despite the differences, FPL employees were as dedicated to service restoration then as they were after Hurricane Andrew. Work crews made their way to Miami over flooded, pitted roads, and many employees got their start with FPL in those hectic days. "Just jump on the truck," was the word to any able-bodied person who asked for work.
