By 1924 hypermodernism was close to its peak, with the openings propaganda war in full swing. Tartakower’s Die hypermoderne Schachpartie had started to appear the previous year, and the January 1924 Wiener Schachzeitung (pages 5-12) offered the rare spectacle of two leading theoreticians, Grünfeld and Tartakower, debating its analysis. Grünfeld himself wrote a book in 1924, Die Damenbauereröffnung und das Damengambit, but it would seem to have had little impact. (Confusingly, another 1924 book was Das Damengambit und Damenbauerspiel by K. Emmrich. Its impact, if any, is even less evident.) After 1 d4 d5 Grünfeld’s practice at this time was to give an exclamation mark to 2 c4, claiming (Deutsche Schachzeitung, September 1924, page 209) that ‘2 Nf3 Nf6 3 c4! c5!

Unlike the car shows of today, in 1924 experimental and prototype vehicles were not eligible for display - only production vehicles were allowed. Chrysler would not be denied. The show headquarters were at the Hotel Commodore. Chrysler rented the lobby of the hotel for display of the Six. No one could enter or leave the hotel without seeing the cars. By the end of the show he had secured hundreds of orders for the advanced design of the Chrysler Six.

Born in Canada on December 20, 1924, McKim came to Los Angeles as a young boy and became a child actor, working with many of the top stars of the day. In fact, he didn't get the first Disney position he wanted, after auditioning for the voice of Pinocchio in the 1930s. After serving in the U.S. Army in World War II, McKim enrolled in Art Center College of Design. The day after he graduated, he was called back to the Army to serve in Korea, where he earned several medals and honors, including the Distinguished Service Cross and the Bronze Star. Upon returning to the States, he took acting roles as well as advanced art classes at the Chouinard Art Institute.

The democratic Convention of the 1924 revealed a party severely split on a number of important areas. The largest one were the Klu Klux Clan and Prohibition. Eastern and Urban voters strongly opposed the Klan while Southern/ Westerners and rural voters either supported them or were silent. The opponents to the Klan attempted to have the convention pass a resolution condemning the Clan but if failed by one vote. The nominees be considered... reflected these splits. Governor Al Smith of New York was the clear choice of the Eastern urban voters while William McAdoo who supported Prohibition was a favorite of the West.

"Central Park was laid out as a restful recreation area," state senator Nathan Straus, Jr., said in 1924 when urging that cars be banned. "not as a thoroughfare for mechanical transportation." But by 1932 the automobile was firmly entrenched in city life, and park administrators installed in the park those most prosaic and mechanical of city features, traffic lights.
