1922: Louis Armstrong
built 208 days ago
The year was 1922. F. Scott Fitzgerald spun tales of beautiful flappers and dashing aristocrats. Crowds danced to the hot licks of cool jazz musicians like Louis Armstrong. Secret Speakeasies and backyard stills sprung up in the wake of Prohibition. Women swooned at the images of Rudolph Valentino and Douglas Fairbanks on the silver screen. The discovery of King Tut’s tomb gave the public a glimpse of the awesome riches of ancient Egypt.
Ray Schalk, 1922 The trend toward runs and homers continued through the 1922 baseball season, particularly in the National League. Philadelphia and St. Louis became the first National League teams in this century to crack more than 100 home runs during the season; the Phillies hammered 116, St. Louis hit 107. The National League batted .292 to the American League's .285 and saw its overall ERA rise to a bloated 4.10.
Perhaps the most significant departure from New Orleans was in 1922 when Louis Armstrong was summoned to Chicago by King Oliver, his mentor. Louis Armstrong swung with a great New Orleans feeling, but unlike any of his predecessors, his brilliant playing led a revolution in jazz that replaced the polyphonic ensemble style of New Orleans with development of the soloist's art.
