* Title for 1921 is in some dispute. The official NFL position awards the title to George Halas' Chicago Staleys with a 10-1-1 record. However, Buffalo adherents claimed that Chicago counted a non-league game in their record, and as ties were simply dropped when determining winning percentage prior to 1972, each team would have 9-1 records.

Manager Kid Gleason entered the 1921 season with a mix of aging veterans and newcomers. It was a mixture of players that went from being a league contender to being a fixture in the bottom of the league standings. The Chicago White Sox would not have another winning season until 1925 when the team finished 79-75 under Manager Eddie Collins. The team didn't finish in the top three of its division again until 1936 (the White Sox were 20 games out of first place). The team didn't win the division again until 1959.

After admitting the use of players who had college eligibility remaining during the 1921 season, Clair and the Green Bay management withdrew from the APFA, January 28. Curly Lambeau promised to obey league rules and then used $50 of his own money to buy back the franchise. Bad weather and low attendance plagued the Packers, and Lambeau went broke, but local merchants arranged a $2,500 loan for the club. A public nonprofit corporation was set up to operate the team, with Lambeau as head coach and manager.
