One of a class of two, W 192 was the first locomotive to be designed and built by the Railways Department (but not the first locomotive built in NZ). W 192 saw service on the rugged Upper Hutt-Cross Creek section, including the Rimutaka Incline (for which it was fitted with special cow-catchers), and later was sent to the West Coast for working the Rewanui and Paparoa Inclines. Because of its historical significance, W 192 was preserved by the NZR (later by the Rail Heritage Trust). It was based in Linwood, Christchurch, and was operated when required by Tranz Rail on behalf of the Rail Heritage Trust. W 192 saw some use on the Ferrymead Railway early in 2002, filling in for Wd 357. W 192 has seen numerous visits to the Weka Pass Railway, was again expected to attend the 2003 Waipara Vintage festival in September... this locomotive (like the other visitor locomotives) was withdrawn from participating in the festival.
