The 1918 24 cent Inverted Jenny stamp is the most popular and desired philatelic error in the world. Since December of 2006, when StampWants.com first announced their promotion, the Catalog Value of the C3a has skyrocketed -- no doubt in large part due to the excitement of this unprecedented giveaway. By next year the stamp is on track to be worth even more than ever, considering the recent record breaking sales of single C3a's -- on November 14, 2007 when a single exceptionally centered C3a was sold by Robert A. Siegel Auction Galleries for $977,500, and as recently as December 26, 2007 when Heritage Auction Galleries sold a never hinged example for $825,000.

A specimen of the influenza virus which killed 21 million people in the 1918 worldwide epidemic has been recovered from the frozen remains of a flu victim buried in Alaska. Researchers at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology announced Thursday that biopsy specimens from a frozen corpse exhumed from a cemetery in Brevig Mission contain genetic material from the killer flu. Experts have said that analyzing the 1918 virus genetic pattern will help science learn how that particular virus was able to kill so many people worldwide and will help researchers prepare vaccines to protect against the virus if it breaks out again.

The 1918 Representation of the People Act increased the electorate to about 21 million. 8.4 million were women. Therefore the act gave women a 40% ‘stake’ in elections. About 22% of women 30 years of age and above were excluded from the right to vote as they were not property owners. These were women who were invariably working class. The tendency to think that many of the newly enfranchised women were conservative by nature and Conservative politically, seems to be true.

In the fall of 1918 the Great War in Europe was winding down and peace was on the horizon. The Americans had joined in the fight, bringing the Allies closer to victory against the Germans. Deep within the trenches these men lived through some of the most brutal conditions of life, which it seemed could not be any worse. Then, in pockets across the globe, something erupted that seemed as benign as the common cold. The influenza of that season... was far more than a cold. In the two years that this scourge ravaged the earth, a fifth of the world's population was infected.
[H]ow does that strange court decision fit into the rapid spread of the 1918 Flu? The primary defense which the human body has, to stop the spread of viral infections is to produce a fever. The fever is not a symptom of disease, but is actually the body's primary anti-viral immune system. The fever stops the telomeres on the ends of viral RNA from making copies of itself.
