1918: People
built 239 days ago
The 1918 Representation of the People Act was the start of female suffrage in Great Britain. The bill was passed by an overwhelming majority in the House of Commons (385 for to 55 against) – an element of support that surprised the Suffragettes and other suffragist movements. The 1918 Representation of the People Act gave women of property over the age of 30 the right to vote – not all women, therefore, could vote – but it was a major start.
In 1918, a Great Flu Pandemic swept the world, killing an estimated 20-40 million people... making it the largest and most destructive outbreak of any infectious disease in recorded history. This virus was unusual not only in its higher than average mortality rate, but also in the age groups that it attacked. Unlike other outbreaks it targeted not only the very young and old, but also young adults (20-40 year olds). Why the 1918 virus was so devastating is still a mystery. A thorough molecular understanding is now sought to offer reasons why this influenza virus was so pathogenic and how it managed to evade the immune system so effectively. Unfortunately, no intact virus survived, since the pandemic struck before viruses were even identified as the causative agent.
In 1918 millions died worldwide from what was thought to have been a vicious fast-moving and lethal bird-flu virus. A closer, objective look at what actually happened shows that it was iatrogenic — caused by medication. Specifically, newly invented aspirin-like medications to reduce fever were widely used, and a great variety of viruses multiplied rapidly in people who initially reported feeling better, as their fever went down.

The Spanish flu virus that killed 50 million people in 1918-19 was probably a strain that originated in birds, research has shown. US scientists have found the 1918 virus shares genetic mutations with the bird flu virus now circulating in Asia.

When the 1918 flu disappeared, no samples of the virus were retained for scientific study. In 1997... scientists recovered fragments of the virus’s RNA genome from the preserved remains of infected people. The genome of the flu virus is composed of 8 RNA segments. Recently, scientists were able to remake 1918 flu using a
