The 1917 to 1920 models might be considered the “elite” of the black Fords; not because they were the earliest, but because they represent the period of the greatest changes. Changes not only in the car, but in the Ford Motor Company itself.

Remarkably the battles of 1917 are no longer well remembered. This, despite the fact that Australian battle casualties in that year were the highest ever and even exceeded all those for the entire Second World War.

On 23rd February 1917 the International Women's Day Festival in St. Petersburg turned into a city-wide demonstration, as exasperated women workers left factories to protest against food shortages. Men soon joined them, and on the following day - encouraged by political and social activists - the crowds had swelled and virtually every industry, shop and enterprise had ceased to function as almost the entire populace went on strike.
The windshield frame and mounting brackets on the open cars were modified during 1917. Similar to the 1915-16 type, the cast support brackets now bolted to the frame rather than being riveted. In addition, the windshield hinge was modified so that the hinge was off-center, making the windshield a little higher when in the folded position. Apparently the change in the mounting (bolts instead of rivets) came first; the new hinge came later.

In the Australian experience of war, no year has been more tragic than 1917. It was a period that ended much as it had begun with the troops bogged in the muddy trenches of France and Belgium. In the intervening twelve months great battles were fought at Bullecourt, Messines, and in a series collectively known as the Third Battle of Ypres.
