Cleveland's acquisition of Tris Speaker in 1916 was the most sensational trade in history up to that point. It served to make the otherwise lackluster Indians instantly respectable. After the 1915 season, when the Red Sox let him go, Speaker played like a man whose cage had been opened. He came out roaring in 1916, posting a .386 average to beat Ty Cobb by .015 in the race for the batting title. Speaker ... led the American League in hits (211), doubles (41), and slugging (.502).

Established in 1916, Copa America is the premier international soccer tournament in the Americas. It is organized by CONMEBOL, the South American Football Confederation, and will be held in Venezuela, June 26 through July 15, 2007. This is the first time Venezuela will be hosting the tournament. Argentina and Brazil, the world's second and third-ranked teams, will take part, as will Mexico and the United States.

Madame Walker moved to Harlem in 1916 and opened an elegant and fully equipped beauty salon. In 1917 she bought another property and built a mansion, where she entertained the rich and famous. Madame Walker was ... a human rights activist, and visited the White House as part of a delegation that was petitioning President Woodrow Wilson to make lynching a federal crime. She also travelled around the country promoting her products and speaking out on women's and African-American rights. C.J. Walker died in 1919, leaving her business and her legacy to her daughter, L'Aliea, who continued her work.

Ethel Percy Andrus became California's first female high school principal in 1916 when she was appointed principal of East Los Angeles High School, whose name she soon changed to Lincoln High School, hoping to inspire its ethnically diverse student body. Following many years in education, Dr. Andrus turned her attention to the needs of people in the second half of their lives. In 1958, Dr. Andrus established AARP to promote independence, dignity and purpose for all mid-life and older Americans.
