In 1912 there were three major contenders for the Democratic nomination, The three were House Speaker Champ Clark,, Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee Congressman Oscar W Underwood and Woodrow Wilson governor of New Jersey. 1912 was the first year that the democrats had primaries to select delegates for the convention. Wilson and Clark each won a number of primaries, and Clark arrived at the convention with the largest number of delegates pledged to him. When the convention opened Clark received the support of the Tammany Organization in New York. That support had the effect of turning Byran who had been largely neutral into an opponent of Clarke. On the first ballot ... Clark led with 440 1/4 votes to 324 for Wilson, 148 for Harmon 117 1/4 for Underwood and the rest scattered.

By 1912, the population of Belfast was nearly 400, 000 compared with 174,000 in 1871. The city had a thriving industrial economy with flourishing textile and shipbuilding trades. Electric trams had been introduced as public transport in 1905. The motor car had made its first appearance in 1895 but as archive photographs attest, the car was still in its infancy as a mode of transport in Belfast. Belfast city centre was no longer residential, the Georgian townhouses in Donegall Place became shops and business premises for firms of accountants, solicitors and offices for city merchants. Owners of vacant business property in the city centre advertised the merits of their buildings by drawing attention to availability of space for stagecoaches and horses:

In late December or early January the new 1912 body appeared. This is the style with the smooth sides, the rear-opening rear doors, the one-piece firewall, the top-support strap which now hooked to the windshield, and with the fore doors. There were at least two of this style: one with outside rear door handles, and the other with inside handles. These two models definitely were 1912 Fords. To add to the confusion, there were numerous variations in these bodies, and it appears that the 1911 style was ... used in early calendar 1912. In addition, the 1913 bodies appeared in late 1912, but these are never called 1912 Fords.

On November 5, 1912, Wilson won the presidency with an Electoral College majority of 435 to 88 for Progressive Theodore Roosevelt and 8 for Republican William Howard Taft. However, Wilson received only a plurality of the popular vote, 42% to Roosevelt’s 27%, Taft’s 23%, and Social Eugene Deb’s 6%. Wilson’s percentage was actually lower than Bryan’s 43% in 1908, revealing the importance of the Republican split to his 1912 victory. The Democrats remained the majority party in the U.S. House, with 291 seats to 127 for Republicans and 14 for Progressives, and gained control of the U.S. Senate, with 51 Democrats to 44 Republicans and 1 Progressive. The size of the majorities and the relative harmony in the Democratic Party helped President Wilson enact his “New Freedom” legislative agenda.
