The 1909 Wright Military Flyer is the world's first military airplane. In 1908, the U.S. Army Signal Corps advertised for bids for a two-seat observation aircraft. The general requirements were as follows: that it be designed to be easily assembled and disassembled so that an army wagon could transport it; that it would be able to carry two people with a combined weight of 160 kg (350 lb), and sufficient fuel for 200 km (125 mi); that it would be able to reach a speed of at least 64 kph (40 mph) in still air. This speed performance would be calculated during a two-lap test flight over a five-mile course, with and against the wind. It must demonstrate the ability to remain in the air for at least one hour without landing, and then land without causing any damage that would prevent it from immediately starting another flight. It should be able to ascend in any sort of country in which the Signal Corps might need it in field service and be able to land without requiring a specially prepared spot; be able to land safely in case of accident to the propelling machinery; and be simple enough to permit someone to become proficient in its operation within a reasonable amount of time.

The hurricane of July 21, 1909, did extensive damage to Galveston's beachfront. The Breakers and Murdoch's bathhouses were destroyed, as was Bettison's Pier. The Surf Bathhouse... escaped significant damage. The Seawall was strewn with wreckage, although it weathered its first major test with flying colors. As the Galveston Daily News, July 21, 1909, noted, 'the Seawall paid for itself today.' No lives were lost on Galveston Island, but 20 people died on the coast and 5 drowned at fishing piers on the jetties. Altogether, Galveston County sustained only about $2 million in damage.

Started in a small warehouse by Michio Suzuki back in 1909, Suzuki aimed at making better looms for the Japanese silk industry. It was only thirty years after its existence that the company started thinking of diversifying into cars, motorcycles and related machinery. In fact, it was only after the collapse of the cotton market in 1951, that Suzuki seriously got into the motorcycle and car industry.
Bell Miller, the former owner of the Inn at 835, built in 1909, was so proud of her dream home that she never left. Apparently, her ghost still enjoys chatting with guests, removing books from the bookshelves and keeping the place pristine by making small repairs around the house. As one TripAdvisor traveler said, "I got into my room and I just had this odd feeling like someone was watching me."
