Theodore Roosevelt's nomination at the Republican convention in June of 1904 was without opposition. The Democrats nominated Alton Parker of New York on the first ballot at their convention. The two contestants differed very little on the issues. Thus, the contest centered on the personalities of the two candidates. Roosevelt won the election easily.

The brainchild for the 1904 tournament was William D. Rider, Jr., who was the guiding force behind the construction and management of the Hotel Rider (see below). Most of the support for the tournament was provided by Rider and the directors of the Erie Railroad Company. Additional support was received from chess clubs around the country in the form of subscriptions to the Daily Bulletin for the tournament. Rider died in 1905, ending all hope of a repeat of this famous tournament.

In the mid-summer of 1904, rumors began circulating among Democrats that Republican National Committee Chairman George Cortelyou was blackmailing corporation executives to contribute to the Roosevelt campaign or face antitrust lawsuits. The press began reporting the story in September, and Democratic nominee Parker repeated the rumors when he finally took to the stump in October. However, the charges were without substance and had little effect on the election outcome. In fact, some of the largest GOP donors that year were later prosecuted by the Roosevelt administration for antitrust violations.
During 23 May to 1 Dec 1904, the Wrights attempted to fly or flew a total of 105 times at Huffman Prairie, eight miles east of Dayton, OH. Without the high winds of Kitty Hawk, the Wrights had great difficulty getting off the ground in Dayton. Beginning 7 Sep 1904, Wrights used catapult to launch plane in calm wind. This "catapult" was actually a wooden derrick, 20 feet high, which dropped a 1200- to 1400-pound weight. The weight was attached to a rope. The rope stretched down the derrick, under the launching rail, and back to the trolley on which the Flyer traveled.
An exuberant planting in the1904 Garden The 1904 Garden is named after the Class of 1904, which in 1935, proposed using funds collected in the memory of a former classmate to establish a cutting garden. The cutting garden was created in the Northern end of the then Clara Leigh Dwight Garden, which extended South all the way to Pageant Field. In 1952 the entire garden became known simply as the 1904 Garden.
