Before the 1903 season, the rival National and American Leagues came to an agreement. The American League would be recognized as a major league, separate from but equal to the National. In return, A.L. owners would stop raiding the rosters of N.L. teams. The American League had a new look, as the Baltimore team had moved to New York and the Milwaukee franchise had been relocated to St. Louis.

Roadster addicts got a nostalgic treat last week when documentary-maker Ken Burns previewed his GM-sponsored film "Horatio's Drive" on the first cross-country trek, made in 1903, from San Francisco to New York - in a topless Winton. The film will be shown on PBS television on October 6 at 9 p.m. eastern time and is a salute to offroad driving at a time when highways did not exist. Meanwhile, VW's Concept R, and a bevy of roadsters that have been revealed or kept under cover, will be exhibited at the Detroit show in January. -Mac Gordon

The second Edwards School opened on the corner of Allin and Market Streets in 1903 and cost $50,671 to complete. The Edwards School construction was funded by a bond issue that ... included the construction costs for a new Emerson and Irving Schools, and an addition to the recently completed Washington School. The bond was approved by the voters on April 6, 1903.
