The 1902 aircraft has two wings and an elevator/stabilizer mounted in the front like the 1901 aircraft. As with previous aircraft, the pilot lies on the bottom wing and controls the roll of the aircraft by warping the wing shape. On the 1902 aircraft, and on all later flyers, the warping was controlled by a hip cradle instead of the pedals on the 1900 and 1901 aircraft.

The 1902 football team had a losing season. They defeated only one team, Cornell College, and tied with William Penn. They lost the other six games that season, including a devastating loss to Iowa State 0-52.

This collection comprises over 55,000 images of urban life captured on glass plate negatives between 1902 and 1933 by photographers employed by the Chicago Daily News, then one of Chicago's leading newspapers. The photographs illustrate the enormous variety of topics and events covered in the newspaper, although only about twenty percent of the images in the collection were published in the newspaper. Most of the photographs were taken in Chicago, Illinois, or in nearby towns, parks, or athletic fields. In addition to many Chicagoans, the images include politicians, actors, and other prominent people who stopped in Chicago during their travels and individual athletes and sports teams who came to Chicago. Also included are photographs illustrating the operations of the Chicago Daily News itself and pictures taken on occasional out-of-town trips by the Daily News's photographers to important events, such as the inauguration of presidents in Washington, D.C.

At the end of 1902, it seemed that all that remained for the first successful airplane was the development of the propulsion system. During that winter and spring the brothers built their engine and perfected their propellers for the 1903 flyer. When they returned to Kitty Hawk in the fall of 1903, they used the 1902 aircraft to keep their piloting skills at a high level. They ... began to fly the aircraft in a different way. Rather than staying close to the earth, they would pull the aircraft up into a strong wind and attempt to "soar", to remain nearly motionless over a spot on the ground. With the new technique, they were able to complete glider flights of over a minute in the air.
