The finish of Baden-Baden 1870 marked the end of the beginning of hostilities. The advance of French troop alongside of the Rhine went through Weissemburg. They had to withdraw at Wörth on 6 August 1870. The German army had larger numbers of men at the front and used the superior Krupp canons. The thunder of the artillery could be heard at a distance of 30 km in Baden-Baden. At the end of August, Napoleon III was beaten in the battle of Sedan.

On June 30, 1870, the famous race between the Robert E. Lee and the Natchez ends with the Robert E Lee winning by six and a half hours. Captain John Cannon cut every corner to beat Captain Thomas Paul Leathers and the Natchez, which carried freight and passengers and had made all of its scheduled landings. Leathers had been born in 1816 in Kentucky, but preferred the gentility of the lower Mississippi. He went into shipbuilding, at first modest craft, then the large steamboats that he named after the Natchez Indians that fascinated him. He built eight of them, each bigger than the previous.

The 1870's saw the rise of the sack suit to widespread popularity, on any street many fashionable young men could be seen in narrowly tailored sack suits. But as this drawing shows, it was still common to see frock coats during the day. It ... remained common for gentlemen to pair mismatched separates instead of a suit, particularly common was fawn or light brown trousers with black coats.
Baden-Baden 1870 can be regarded as the first [S]uper tournament. In comparison with London 1851, London 1862 and Paris 1867, three main changes were made: a) time was restricted with clocks, b)draws counted as half points, and c)only international top players were invited. The similarities with the later events in Tilburg, Linares and Dortmund are striking.
