Jim West is an ex-soldier turned secret agent in 1860's America. This ain't your father's Jim West, either...he's black! West is teamed up with another agent, Artemus Gordon. Gordon is an inventor of sorts. Their mission? To stop some mad scientist guy named Loveless.

By the 1860's, in America, it may be safe to say that almost all paper used to print newspapers on was machine made. One notable exception is when newspaper editions were printed on wallpaper. Wallpaper, while a percentage was machine made in this period, the majority of it was handmade. The initial steps to produce sheets for wallpaper were much the same as in the making of other paper.

Using the notes they have made about what the characters wore, the students should now research what a person would wear in 1860's America. Primary source materials such as photos, drawings, and paintings of the time are a great place to start. Costume books (as suggested in the Teacher’s References) and Web sites such as, the Costume Gallery and The Metropolitan Museum of Art are good places to explore. Remind students that they need to stay historically accurate in their designs.

Once they leave the staging area the user will find themselves on the streets of 1860's America. This area is a 3-dimensional corridor complete with various pieces of video-projected scenery. Through sensors placed on the costume, the exhibit tracks the participant's position and bearing. If they maintain the proper form and posture, the illusion of the past will remain consistent; if they falter, the projected scene will fade back to the modern world. Only by becoming physically a part of the past can the participant remain in the 19th century.
