ELYRIA, Ohio, April 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Northern Savings & Loan (OTC Bulletin Board: NLVS) announced that its earnings for the first quarter 2006 were $148,084, down from $769,307 from the first quarter of the previous year. The decline in net income was primarily due to increases in non-interest expense of $811,000. The primary component of these were approximately $650,000 in legal, advisory and compensation costs for the announced acquisition of Northern Savings by First Place Financial Corporation headquartered in Warren, Ohio. Net interest income declined by $126,000 in the quarter as a result of the narrowing margin between rising deposit costs and revenue from loan interest. The vote on the merger by Northern Savings shareholders is expected to take place in late May with the closing to take place before the end of June 2006. Northern Savings and Loan is a locally owned and operated financial institution with eight offices in Elyria, North Ridgeville, Grafton, Avon Lake and Amherst.
