The French fishery at Newfoundland reached its peak in the first half of the 17th century. The Spanish and Portuguese fisheries were dying away, leaving the English as the only competitor. But the French fleet was much larger: at mid-century, French fishing vessels outnumbered English ones by two to one, approximately 500 to 250.

All Fours originated in England, probably in the 17th century. It was taken to the USA, where it became very popular in the 19th century and gave rise to numerous other games. Meanwhile All Fours itself has become the national game of Trinidad and continues to be played in Lancashire, England.

Italy and France continued to set the dance fashions in the early 17th century. Caroso's Nobilta di dame was translated into Spanish and reissued as late as 1630 and English texts refer to the most popular European dances and steps.
