The average life span in the 17th century was shorter than today. Average life expectancy at birth was only 35. That does not mean that people dropped dead when they reached that age! Instead many of the people born died while they were still children. Out of all people born between one third and one half died before the age of about 16. However if you could survive to your mid-teens you would probably live to your 50s or early 60s.
An excellent site about one of the lesser-known case of witchcraft accusation in the 17th century. The site includes images of original documents (with transcriptions), photographs of period homes, maps, and some portraits. From the site: "Mary Parsons is perhaps the most infamous resident of Northampton's early settlement period. She was involved in witchcraft-related trials in 1656 and 1674, and possibly again in 1679. Her story is a fascinating one that sheds light on the workings of the Puritan mind and the complicated social and cultural situation of the period."

In American card game books of the early 19th century, All Fours is a two-player game, very similar to the 17th century English game described above. When cutting for deal the cards now rank in their normal order with ace high, and the deal can be one or three cards at a time at the dealer's choice. Many play that if the non-dealer begs and the dealer decides to change the trump suit, then after the necessary extra cards have been dealt, the players discard unwanted cards to reduce their hands to six cards. The target score is 10 points.

In the early 17th century firearms were either matchlocks or wheel locks. A matchlock held a slow burning match, which was touched to the powder when the trigger was pulled. With a wheel lock a metal wheel spun against iron pyrites making sparks. During the 17th century both of these were gradually replaced by the flintlock which worked by hitting a piece of flint and steel making sparks.
Philosophers in the 17th century debated whether visual beauty was a lansscaping necessary goal of landscaping. With the advent of the positivists by the early 20th century... most western philosophers had rejected the notion of an objective esthetic standard for any lanndscaping form of art, including landscaping. Practitioners since the mid-20th century have experimented with jarring visual panoramas that are now generally accepted, at least in western societies, as falling landscapimg within the scope of landscaping. The photograph at right depicts a well known example.

In the early 17th century the architect Inigo Jones introduced the classical style of architecture (based on ancient Greek and Roman styles). He designed the Banqueting Hall in Whitehall, which was the first purely classical building in England.
