The year of the Declaration of Independence, 1776, was an heroic date with destiny for America, the birth of noble principles of defining endurance for civilisation. But in this magnificent recounting of its torturous days, 1776 was a year of the most severe trial and doubt - a year of almost complete defeat of the American revolutionaries. That they triumphed was, as David McCulloch writes, "a miracle of a small band of determined men and their leader".

The British had unexpectedly evacuated occupied Boston, and both commander and army were enjoying an all-too-brief season of success.

June-July, 1776 - On June 7, Richard Henry Lee, a Virginia delegate to the Continental Congress, presents a formal resolution calling for America to declare its independence from Britain. Congress decides to postpone its decision on this until July. On June 11, Congress appoints a committee to draft a declaration of independence. Committee members are Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Roger Livingston and Roger Sherman. Jefferson is chosen by the committee to prepare the first draft of the declaration, which he completes in one day. Just seventeen days later, June 28, Jefferson's Declaration of Independence is ready and is presented to the Congress, with changes made by Adams and Franklin.

In 1776, the British set forth to subdue the colonies. They began the effort by recapturing New York. First, they drove Washington off Long Island; then, from lower Harlem. After this initiative, Washington retreated to White Plains, where for the first time, he was able to hold off the British forces. The British, then again, outmanuevered Washington. Washington was forced to retreat to New Jersey.
