A Book of Centuries is like a timeline in a notebook. As its name suggests, each two-page spread in the book is devoted to one hundred years — a century — of history. Each student creates his or her own book, recording historical events and names of importance, along with pictures, poems, quotes, and anything else that makes the book individual. You can ... add written narrations, illustrations from the Internet, or titles of books you’ve read that are set in that time period. - Vienna -- Centuries
Located in the heart of Vienna is the Stephansdom, a beautiful 12th century church, which contains stained glass windows depicting the Viennese Jews during that period. Nearby is the Stadtempel and the Judenplatz, the main square of the Jewish community for nearly 500 years. Today in the Judenplatz, one can find the offices of a number of Sephardic organizations and a small beit midrash. Inside one of these beit midrashes, is a subterranean mikveh dating back to the 15th century. - Protestantism -- Century
One of the most striking facts in the history of Protestantism in the 19th century was its great expansion in North America. The United States by 1910 had the largest Protestant population of any land—from 65,000,000 to 66,000,000 (out of a total population of 79,000,000)[1], which is based upon the census of 1900. Britain probably comes next with 38,000,000 Protestants (total population 42,500,000) and Germany third with somewhat more than 35,000,000 (total population 56,000,000).[2] - Mongolia -- Centuries
Until the twentieth century, most of the peoples who inhabited Mongolia were nomads, and even in the 1980s a substantial proportion of the rural population was essentially nomadic. Originally there were many warlike nomadic tribes living in Mongolia, and apparently most of these belonged to one or the other of two racially distinct and linguistically very different groupings. One of these groupings, the Yuezhi, was related linguistically to the ancient nomadic Scythian peoples--who inhabited the steppes north and northeast of the Black Sea and the region east of the Aral Sea--and was therefore Indo-European. The other grouping was the Xiongnu, a nomadic people of uncertain origins. - Anabaptist -- Centuries
The character of Anabaptist groups went through some significant transformations over the course of the early modern era. While the first Anabaptists were voluntary converts to the new faith, most Anabaptists after the middle of the sixteenth century were born into established communities of faith. They accepted both adult baptism and political discrimination as part of their inheritance. It was only after the first generation of the Reformation that nonresistance (which denominational historians emphasized in their interpretations) rose to the central position that it enjoyed throughout most of the rest of the early modern period. Over the course of the sixteenth century the separatist Anabaptists' radical rejection of mainstream society diminished, and secular governments tended to be more accepting of the peaceful, withdrawn dissenters the Anabaptists had become. - Inquisition -- Centuries
The Inquisition was most active in Spain, especially under Tomás de Torquemada; its officials sometimes gained confessions through torture. It did not cease operation in the Spanish Empire until the nineteenth century. - History of Brazil -- Centuries
Unfortunately, the history of indigenous Brazilians follows a pattern similar to that of many aboriginal peoples. The arrival of the white man began a genocidal process of exploitation and killing that has continued through five centuries. Rubber, wood, gold and diamonds are just some of the highly prized resources found on native lands in the Amazon, and the pursuit of those riches has perpetuated a violent frontier mentality that continually threatens the Amazons survival. - Westminster Abbey -- Centuries
Westminster Abbey is an architectural masterpiece of the thirteenth to sixteenth centuries. The Abbey has its origin in a Benedictine monastery, which was greatly enlarged by Edward the Confessor. The church was consecrated in 1065 and since 1066 has been the place for every Coronation and for numerous other Royal occasions. - German Music -- Centuries
A big factor in German music is religion. From the mid 16th century, the German-speaking countries were divided by religious issues. The northerly states were dominated by the Protestant faith, and music was based on a kind of German church hymn called a chorale. Some of the best examples of this style were composed by Martin Luther, the man who led the Protestant break from the Catholic church. Here’s a piece called Ein Feste Burg (A Safe Stronghold) - Byzantine Art -- Centuries
CAMBRIDGE, MA (September 18, 2002)-This fall Harvard's Arthur M. Sackler Museum will be the first U.S. museum to present an exhibition exploring the life of Byzantine women through art of the era. The display will feature almost 200 objects, including jewelry, icons, religious amulets, textiles, coins, and household items, that date from the 4th through 15th centuries. Byzantine Women and Their World opens October 25, 2002 and will remain on view through April 27, 2003.
