Pam is the friendly but often frustrated receptionist at the Scranton branch of the fictitious paper-distributor Dunder Mifflin. She can seem shy or hesitant to speak her mind, but enjoys chatting with her best friend and current boyfriend, salesman Jim Halpert. She often helps Jim play pranks on his deskmate Dwight Schrute. At the beginning of the series she has been engaged to warehouse worker Roy Anderson for three years.
